Fast Food
INTRODUCTION Many people because of busy schedules, work, and family obligations, rely on fast food restaurants as their primary source of food. Good or bad there are many fast food restaurants to choose from and each has its good points and bad points. The object of this web quest is to identify the potential dangers related to poor nutrition and to make personal lifestyle changes based on research and credible information.
TASK In this web quest scenario it will be assumed that the fast food restaurant is the only source of food available to three individuals. You will make calculations and recommendations for these individuals based on the information available to you through this exercise.
Task#1. For Subject # 1 (see table below) - Go to the fast food link at http://www.fastfoodfacts.info/. Go to the Fast Food Nutrition by Restaurant and try to pick the most nutritious meals for both lunch and dinner and attempt to keep both meals under 2000 calories for the day.
Task#2. For Subject #2 (see table below) - Choose a second restaurant. Go to http://www.fastfoodfacts.info/. For Subject #2 find the most unhealthy (based on number of calories and amount of fat) meals for both lunch and dinner.
Task#3 For Subject #3 (see table below) - You are subject #3. Choose a third restaurant. Go to http://www.fastfoodfacts.info/. Pick your favorite meal (that you would eat if forced to eat fast food) for lunch and dinner.
PROCESS Chart the results of these three individuals for a typical day using the following categories:

Using the USDA Recommendations (www.mypramid.gov) - go to page 22 on the USDA Guidelines - compare the diet you created in the tasks above to the USDA Recommendations for nutrient intake for the meals you created. Compare ONLY the items listed in the graph above (fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar (if listed), protein, calcium, iron (if listed) and vitamin A (if listed) and vitamin C (if listed).
Based on the findings from the USDA Recommendations, summarize how you could change the diet to make it more healthy or to change potential nutritional problem. State your rationale using the guidelines to support your opinion.
